The Healthy Kitchen at Palm Healthcare Pavilion is a community nutrition resource center to promote culturally appropriate healthy lifestyles for individuals and families. It features educational classes related to nutrition, wellness and food resource budgeting. The Healthy Kitchen is the only kitchen of its type in Palm Beach County (PBC).

The classes at the Healthy Kitchen aim to reverse two trends that are threatening the health of Palm Beach County residents. Firstly, classes provide relevant and interactive nutrition education and cooking demonstrations to encourage behavior changes needed to decrease the prevalence or delay the onset of diet-related chronic illnesses. Secondly, some classes provide food resource management skills, helping families learn how to stretch their food budgets while also being mindful of healthy eating.

The Healthy Kitchen and its programs are needed because many in PBC have or are at risk of developing diabetes, obesity and heart disease – diseases with disabling consequences if not managed well. Research shows that in many cases simple lifestyle changes including diet modification and an increase in physical activity have a significant impact in combating chronic diseases. The classes implemented at the Healthy Kitchen focus on helping individuals make life changes that will have a real impact on their health and wellbeing. Many in the PBC area also face challenging economic times and need to learn how to stretch their food budget so they can provide nutrient rich food for their families. Programs assist families in learning how they can buy and prepare the most healthful foods on a limited budget.

The Healthy Kitchen at Palm Healthcare Pavilion has three primary goals:

  1. Create a welcoming community space that supports the implementation of various nutritional programs that will empower people through education.
  2. Through programming, promote long-term healthy lifestyle changes that will lead to a reduction in the number of people with chronic diseases or delay the onset of chronic diseases in Healthy Kitchen participants.
  3. Leverage the knowledge and resources of many by creating enduring partnerships with likeminded individuals and organizations.
